Proper 21

Matthew 21.23-32

Context

In Matthew 21 we encounter a piece of practical advice, although at first sight it does not seem to be very straightforward. The question of Jesus’ authority sets the scene, providing the context for a tiny story that seems to be about motivation.

Common thread: Get on with it (Matthew 21.23-32)

It is a common misapprehension that religion should provide clear-cut answers to everyday problems, and forms of faith that purport to offer this appear seductive to some. Despite his practical approach, however, Jesus does not seem to be suggesting here that decision-making will necessarily be all that straightforward.

An alternative thread, Real fellowship, draws on Philippians 2.1-13.
