Advent 2

Isaiah 40.1-11

Context

On the second Sunday of Advent we encounter in Isaiah ‘a crying voice’ that proclaims a new relationship with God. The Gospel tells us that John the Baptist fulfilled this prophetic message of hope.

Common thread: Waiting with patience (Isaiah 40.1-11)

Akin to the Bible with its 66 books, Isaiah’s 66 chapters are a spiritual ‘game of two halves’. In the first 39 chapters, we witness the holy, righteous side of Almighty God. In Chapter 40, akin to the New Testament, we see the tender, merciful side of God’s character in the opportunity of new relationship with his people. This message of hope to a waiting people is echoed by the words uttered by John the Baptist in the Desert of Judea.

An alternative thread, The beginning of the Gospel, is based on Mark 1.1-8.
